Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego – Fin del Mundo! 29th – 31st August 2009 - Ushuaia, Terre de Feu – Le Bout du Monde! 29-31 aout 2009.

What a feeling flying over Ushuaia! Supposedly the most southerly town in the world ... we’re in the plane looking down on the landscape below us, almost with tears in our eyes for the beauty of it. The excitement and the anxiety of landing in the most southerly town takes us by surprise ... we were not expecting to have such a well of feelings when arriving.

We arrive at our hostel, La Posta, the same Saturday around 4.30pm. It’s a little out of town, but still perfect. It’s so cosy, with very comfortable beds, and of course Lucas and Christian are just so lovely and helpful! We take a walk into town (about 1.5 km), look around for a bit and then stop in a snug little cafe for a hot chocolate and some cake. It very soon hits us that the town of Ushuaia itself has very little to offer, but nonetheless, we’re still very happy to be there. Of course we have to make a stop at the Irish Pub, The Dublin for a Guinness before we eat :-) Dinner is had in a little restaurant named Bodegon Fueguino, where the roast lamb was exceptional, sipping at the Argentinean wine, we realise that we’re lucky people to be feeling what we feel at that moment ... just bliss.

Back at the hostel that evening we have an unfortunate realisation ... Renu had left the credit card in the cash machine at the airport! How stupid can you feel! Never mind, life could be worse ... still a pain in the rear end though!

The next morning we awake to find Ushuaia under an enormous blanket of snow ... just beautiful! We spend the morning taking pictures in the snow and trying thousands of different takes of a video Nico wanted to send back for his mate’s wedding. That afternoon we manage to organise a boat tour around Beagle Channel, which is great ... it’s freezing, still snowing, but good fun. We see lots of different wildlife and also get a feel for what it must be like for fishermen out at rough seas. As we are back on land, Nico realises that lunch had not settled well for him, so we have a quick soup for dinner and then back to the hostel, where Nico is up all night sick.

Monday morning we take a taxi to Glaciar Martial... it’s covered in snow so difficult to see, but still the views are great. It’s the first time that Renu finds herself on a snow covered mountain and is like a child running about in the snow with her snow shoes. We also have the pleasure of walking up with the medics for the French National Olympic Ski Team ...

After the walk, we stop at the cafe at the bottom of the mountain for some lunch ... next big booboo ... Nico forgets his camera there :-( ... must be the southerly air that disagrees with our memory!

Back at the hostel, we rest for a bit before taking our next plane to El Calafate ... for sure we’ll be back in Ushuaia one day, maybe to get back our credit card and camera ;-) But more so to see some of the things we weren’t able to this time due to the season ... like see penguins, or take a boat to Antarctica (that would be amazing!), and of course see the ‘aurora polare’ if we’re are lucky enough ...

Ushuaia, Terre de Feu – Le Bout du Monde! 29-31 aout 2009.
